Many patients that are implanted with Medtronic Sprint Fidelis Defibrillator Leads find themselves in a tough position. They are faced with two difficult options - if they have been fortunate thus far and the device is working properly - leave the leads in place and hope they won't fracture; or undergo a dangerous and difficult surgery to have the defective leads replaced.
Both options are bleak, leaving many Sprint Fidelis Lead Patients feeling confused, anxious and worried.
In October, Medtronic announced a recall of Sprint Fidelis Leads after reports of five deaths that have been linked to fractures in the leads.
A lead is a wire that connects the defibrillator to the patient's heart. If the leads are fractured, they can release a massive and painful shock to the patient. Fractured leads can also prevent a defibrillator from sending a life saving shock to the patient's heart.
According to the Wall Street Journal, 268,000 defective Sprint Fidelis defibrillator leads have been implanted worldwide and approximately 235,000 people are implanted with these devices.
