Medtronic was slapped with a $10 million fine Monday, due to the conduct of their medical device defense attorneys in an infringement case over spinal screws made by the company.
The fine was imposed Monday by U.S. District Court Judge Harrington, who said the company must also pay a port of the plaintiff's attorney fees. The final judgment against the company was $226.3, last year.
In a five page order the judge wrote, "The defendants prolonged the proceedings unnecessarily."
The judge also added that the company's legal team, "elected to proceed with a defense that threatened to mislead and confuse the jury" and sought to take advantage of the case's technical and legal complexities.
