Medtronic's Sofamor Danek unit is suing NuVasive, California medical company that makes medical devices for spines.

Medtronic is accusing the company of patent infringement, involving four product categories and 12 patents.

According to media reports, the patents include products that have been on the market for several years.
NuVasive said it is in the process of assessing its defenses.

Medtronic's Spinal and Biologics unit is located in Memphis, where it employs about 1,300 people who work with surgeons, researchers and others to make technologies for neurological, orthopedic, dental and spinal conditions.
