Heart disease can be scary. For some patients , it means being at risk for dangerously fast and potentially life-threatening heart rates. Thankfully, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) can provide life-saving therapy option.

Benefits

An ICD is designed to help those that have dangerously fast heart rates. The device monitors your heart rate continuously and restores your heart to a normal rate.

Risks

Health risks associated with an ICD implantable device include, but are not limited to, infection and/or sensitivity to the device, failure to deliver therapy as needed or receiving therapy when not needed.

After implantation of an ICD, you will have limitations with respect to electromagnetic radiation and magnetic, electric or gas-powered appliances and tools that you are permitted to be in contact.

ICD treatment is prescribed by your medical doctor. Treatment is not for everyone; your doctor can help you make the right decision. While many individuals due benefit from this form of therapy, results may vary.
