Medtronic Inc. has begun a randomized clinical trial called Protect, with 8,800 patients.

The trial aims to compare its drug-coated stent, Endeavor, and a stent made by Johnson & Johnson, called Cyper, using key safety measures including potentially fatal blood clots.

The first U.S. patient in the study, which began in May 2007, was enrolled by a team of researchers at Doctors Hospital in Edinburg, Texas.

About 5,500 patients are currently enrolled in the study. Three-year data on all patients is expected to be completed by 2012.
