A Medtronic heart device, subsidiary Physio-Control Inc., has landed at the International Space Station.
Physio-Control's LIFEPAK 1000 defibrillator is the first automated external defibrillator to be deployed into outer space. The device was tacked to the space station last month and chosen due to its small size.
The device also requires very little training and maintenance, which the company said better enables astronauts to respond to medical emergencies should they arise.
NASA chose the product after conducting evaluations of 18 other like devices. The device is installed in other places like airplanes and schools.
Medtronic's Spinal and Biologics unit is located in Memphis, where it employs about 1,300 people who work with surgeons, researchers and others to make technologies for neurological, orthopedic, dental and spinal conditions.
