Medtronic lost a legal dispute regarding its CoreValve heart valve system when a jury found the company infringed on patents held by Edwards Lifesciences Inc.
Medtronic intends to appeal the jury's verdict which awarded Edwards $74 million in damages. However, Edwards plans to seek an injunction to stop Medtronic from selling and manufacturing the CoreValve system in the U.S.
The battle centers around the CoreValve transcatheter system, which allows a replacement heart valve to be placed in a patient's body via a catheter inserted in the femoral artery.Edwards has maintained that CoreValve's technology infringes on its "Andersen family" of patents, which covers heart valve replacements performed via catheters.
