Stents are metal tubes that keep clogged arteries in the heart open, a condition that can lead to heart disease and heart attacks. Heart disease claims the lives of hundreds of thousands each year in America.

There are two types of stents - mesh stents are coated with drugs to alleviate scarring and older bare metal stents.

While stents are most commonly used in coronary arteries, they are also used in other areas of the body including bronchi, veins and more.

The main function of a stent is to counteract decreases in blood flow by propping open the passage. Stents are commonly used to help alleviate diminished blood flow to those organs and extremities beyond an obstruction to better maintain proper delivery of oxygenated blood.
