Medtronic is known for developing devices (such as pacemakers and defibrillators) that zap irregular heartbeats back into rhythm without the patient having to do anything. Now, the company wants to apply the same approach to the pancreas.
The FDA, earlier this month, approved Medtronic's Revel technology - the company's second-generation diabetes management system that allows patients to monitor blood sugar levels and adjust insulin.
"Revel is a major step toward the holy grail of medical device makers targeting the vast diabetes market: a fully automated "closed-loop" system in which sensors monitors glucose levels, advanced software crunches the data and feeds it to pumps that deliver the right dose of insulin."
