The creation of artificial pancreas like devices is just around the corner.
Using the idea of an insulin style pump and continuous glucose administration and monitoring, experts in health and metabolic fields feel that the positive joining of these two technologies are in near future.
Having a mechanical or artificial pancreas gives the potential ability for those that require insulin to have a much higher quality of life as well as cutting down on finger sticks, injections and other harsh methods that members of the diabetic community currently deal with.
We are close to having a first generation artificial pancreas, said Dr. Roman Horvoka from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Horovoka is working with Medtronic and Abbott Laboratories amongst other companies, who manufacture continuous monitors and insulin pumps.
Patients with Type 1 Diabetes that have devices have been undergoing testing by members of Dr. Horvoka's research team and they are working aggressively toward developing a method of insulin delivery that many would benefit to creating the first artificial pancreas.
