Following a series of blackouts and dizzy spells, brought on by a slow heartbeat, Andrew, 17, was given a new pacemaker called an Advisa DR MRI SureScan which can be monitored remotely.
Medical staff is able to access the device remotely so long as it is attached to a phone line. Unlike other pacemakers, if at any time he requires an MRI, he can have one without risk.
Kettering General Hospital, where the implantation was done, hopes to fit more patients with the new pacemaker in the future.
The pacemaker is produced by the US-based medical devices company Medtronic. It was first fitted to a patient in Italy on March 15. There are currently about 15 people with them worldwide.
