Stents are metal tubes that are used to help keep clogged arteries open, a condition that can lead to heart attacks and heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer in America, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives each year.

There are two different types of stents - the older bare metal stent and new mesh stents coated with drugs to help alleviate scarring on the artery wall.

The main function of a stent is to counteract significant decreases in vessel or duct diameter by propping open the passage by using a mechanical stent. Commonly, stents are used to help alleviate diminished blood flow to organs and extremities beyond and obstruction to better maintain proper delivery of oxygenated blood.

While the mostly commonly known stent is in coronary arteries they are also used in other natural body areas such as veins, bronchi and the more.
